60 DCS Students Participated in LTU STEM Activity

On November 13, 2019, Dr. Sibrina Collins, Executive Director of Lawrence Technological University’s (LTU) The Marburger STEM Center and STEM Outreach Coordinator Jaclyn Smith exposed 60 Detroit Community Schools’ (DCS) students to STEM. STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Increasingly, more jobs require an education in the STEM fields.

During two group sessions, 30 DCS 8th grade students, and then, 30 students from the 9th and 10th grades participated in a hands-on activity entitled Cards to the Sky. Students worked in teams to plan, design, build and test a stable structure using a deck of cards, scissors, tape and a ruler. The stability of each structure was evaluated by using a fan – the wind. The Cards to the Sky was a fun and educational exercise, where DCS students took an abstract engineering idea and created “real world” solutions.
